There's more to art than you think. It's not just theater, paintings, books and dance. It's the enterprise of human creativity and it takes vastly different shapes and forms. Here you'll find my thoughts about the arts in Charleston and beyond. Neither of us knows what to expect.

Two New Films Being Made in S.C.
June 27, 2008 – 1:40 pm
Two new feature films have just been approved to begin filming in South Carolina this year. Hallmark Production’s Band of Angels, a post-Civil War story about the history of the Fisk University gospel singers, will be shot primarily around Charleston.
Dear John, based on (ladies grab your Kleenex) a Nicholas Sparks novel, is set to be […]
The Media and Trust: We’re nothing without it
March 5, 2008 – 3:55 pm
We’ve had some wonderful discussion about theater today regarding the Village Playhouse’s ersatz theater review published in the Post and Courier on Feb. 28.
In brief, the Playhouse bought ad space in the paper. It filled it with a review published on Lowcountry Stages, a website maintained independently by City Paper theater critic William Bryan. The […]
The Savages, “The Wii-volution,” animal art, Dixieland and more
February 13, 2008 – 12:15 pm
In art this week, we have a review of an exhibit at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park featuring Georgia artist Lou Stovall and local painter Gary Grier.
We also have a think piece on why we look at animals in art, why need a connection to nature, and how we might not need that anymore […]

This week’s Arts and Screen sections are packed with goodies.
We lead off the arts section with a big story on the Charleston Ballet Theatre’s upcoming 20th anniversary performance this weekend. The show will feature Seven Deadly Sins by resident choreographer Jill Eathorne-Bahr. I talked to her about creating the dance and how she got […]

Here’s a preview of what’s coming up in Arts in this week’s City Paper.
Erica Jackson writes about Kulture Klash, a Big Apple-style underground art party happening in the Old Navy Yard this weekend.
The College of Charleston revamps the old Cinderella story with a new contemporary feel, including not-so-kid-friendly references to eating disorders, incest, and self-mutilation. […]
Still Unscripted
August 6, 2007 – 10:19 am
With A&E editor Patrick Sharbaugh off to Japan, I’ll be crashing his Unscripted blog for a while, as well as handling some of his newsgathering duties for the CP.
While the inestimable powers of Patrick are impossible to replace, I’ll do my best to keep you abreast of what’s going on in the arts around town […]
Seeking Weekly Geekly 3.0
May 2, 2007 – 2:36 pm
Well, it’s bad news here on the columnist front. I’ve just heard from my Weekly Geekly columnist Holly Burns — she of the red unmistakably toffee hair, British accent, and peripatetic lifestyle (she recently moved from Charleston to San Francisco via Southeast Asia, if you didn’t know this already by following her insanely popular expat […]
