There's more to art than you think. It's not just theater, paintings, books and dance. It's the enterprise of human creativity and it takes vastly different shapes and forms. Here you'll find my thoughts about the arts in Charleston and beyond. Neither of us knows what to expect.

Kids in the Hall are back!
March 28, 2008 – 6:45 pm
It’s not just big scary dinos at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. It’s the Kids in the Hall, too, on May 25. They are back and they are just as funny. We hope. Tickets on sale April 4.
From the press release:
The 2008 tour, titled “Live As We’ll Ever Be,” represents a new era in […]

Charleston is funny and we can prove it
January 29, 2008 – 1:46 pm
South Carolina doesn’t have the best rep. We’re repeatedly teased by the bigger kids on the block (we’re talking to you, NYC).
While the Yanks may have a case when calling us rednecks (see the Redneck Summer edition of The City Pap), they can’t say we’re not funny.
At the ECNY Awards Monday night, both I Eat […]
The Morning After
January 20, 2008 – 11:12 am
The morning after is always a little bit of a let-down, as you can see by the look on my dog’s face. Jake knows it’s a day for sighing. Oh, well. But last night’s improv masters were trying out outdo each other. We got to see it all. It was a peak moment at this […]

Josh and Tamra Show cute? Not really.
January 19, 2008 – 1:27 pm
I was thinking about it. The picture we used to illustrate the story for The Josh and Tamra Show isn’t quite right. It looks too cutesy, too much like the show’s for kids. It’s not, trust me. Here’s the full interview with some video above of Josh and Tamra in the park asking people […]
I Eat Pandas (And so can you!)
January 19, 2008 – 1:03 pm
Here’s Kinsey Labberton’s full interview with the musical improv group, I Eat Pandas. They perform tonight at Theatre 99 at 9 p.m. You might also check out this video of the duo. They’re constantly asked why they don’t have their own TV show. Here’s their answer (In case you’re wondering: No, it has nothing to […]
No more Bible jokes
January 19, 2008 – 12:40 pm
The crowd at last night’s performance by Hot Sauce was loaded. They were taking entire six packs of Magic Hat and full bottles of wines into the studio to gear up for sketch comedy trio Hot Sauce, who’ve freelanced for Saturday Night Live and other improv theater ensembles in New York City.
Things were going well […]
Choice words from the Apple Sisters
January 19, 2008 – 12:01 pm
The highlight of the acts I’ve seen at the Comedy Festival is the Apple Sisters. It’s original, innovative, multi-layered, and subtly subversive. They might look benign, but they are oh-so-not-benign. While Candy (left) pines for her “man” at war, by the dubious name of Cheryl, Seedy (middle) reminds us of God’s hellfire wrath, and Cora […]
Your last change to laugh — ever!
January 19, 2008 – 11:32 am
Tonight is the final night of the 2008 Charleston Comedy Festival. If you haven’t been out by now to see some of these terrific acts, don’t worry. There’s plenty of tickets left. Go here to find out more. Meanwhile, I had a chance to see The Apple Sisters Variety Show, Hot Sauce, DCUP’s The Simons […]
