Universal Pictures has purchased The Wheel of Time fantasy novel series written by the late Charleston author James O. Rigney’s, Variety reports. Rigney’s widow, Harriet Popham Rigney, confirmed the sale but did not disclose the amount. Rigney’s series has sold more than 44 million copies and several of its titles landed at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list. Rigney, who wrote under the pen name Robert Jordan, died last year at the age of 58 while he was in the process of writing the 12th installment. The last book will be completed by writer Brandon Sanderson from Rigney’s notes and tapes. It is expected to be released in 2009.—Myles Hutto
